Intensified Air Pollution Control in Autumn And Winter: How Should API Equipment Enterprises Respond?

As most regions enter the autumn-winter mode, environmental issues such as smog are becoming focal points for public concern. Experts suggest that with the introduction of action plans to combat environmental pollution, many small and medium-sized API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) enterprises unable to upgrade their environmental protection measures may be eliminated, leading to an industry shakeout. Under the pressure of environmental regulations, API enterprises face significant challenges, while upstream API equipment manufacturers are also likely to experience difficulties. How can the industry avoid widespread production halts or reductions? Both API and equipment enterprises must prepare for a long-term, strategic battle. This article explores how API equipment enterprises can help API manufacturers navigate this crisis and how they can position themselves during this period.、

Enhancing Output and Reducing Pollution: The Key to Solving the Problem

According to experts, the waste generated during API production is extremely challenging to manage, as a pharmaceutical plant often produces dozens of APIs with varying waste profiles. To address API pollution issues, companies must control emissions at the source and increase API output levels. For API equipment enterprises, this necessitates adjusting their development strategies to enhance energy efficiency and environmental performance in the production process.

Improving API output and addressing emissions at the source is fundamental to tackling pollution problems, and it is also the goal driving API equipment research and development. Faced with stringent environmental requirements, API equipment manufacturers must optimize product and organizational structures to develop advanced technologies that help API manufacturers reduce emissions and achieve sustainable development.

With the growing emphasis on environmental protection, API equipment manufacturers are increasingly incorporating green concepts into their designs. For instance, in the field of drying equipment, microwave vacuum drying systems enable a clean, pollution-free drying process for APIs. The penetration capability of microwaves allows simultaneous internal and external heating without thermal conduction, ensuring rapid heating and avoiding the generation of hazardous waste.

To truly control pollution, emissions must be managed at the source. As such, API equipment enterprises must strictly adhere to environmental standards when designing and producing equipment, avoiding environmental sacrifices for short-term gains. For example, Changzhou Lemar Drying has prioritized green development by planning to establish a dedicated environmental protection company and engineering R&D center to focus on energy-saving and environmentally-friendly product design.

Although the importance of green practices is well recognized in China's API equipment industry, technological limitations prevent many manufacturers from achieving low or zero emissions. Core technologies often need to be imported or adapted from abroad. Moving forward, the API equipment industry must invest in talent acquisition, technical innovation, and R&D to drive green upgrades.

Lowering Equipment Costs: A Critical Challenge

In pharmaceutical production, APIs represent the end of the industrial chain and have relatively low added value. However, API production generates considerable wastewater, gas, and solid waste, requiring high-end equipment that is often costly. According to one enterprise, meeting strict environmental standards for factory and equipment construction could require an investment of 400 million yuan. Additionally, routine maintenance costs significantly burden companies. A major concern is whether profitability can be maintained after such substantial environmental investments.

For instance, an API company disclosed that installing a wastewater treatment facility with a daily capacity of 2,500 tons, along with high-concentration wastewater pretreatment, would cost over 50 million yuan. The operating cost for treating one ton of wastewater is around 200 yuan, meaning a daily capacity of 2,500 tons incurs a 500,000-yuan expense. Over time, these costs become astronomical.

China's increasingly stringent pollution control requirements leave API companies grappling with high equipment costs. Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, face the risk of closure or production halts due to an inability to upgrade their equipment.

Experts emphasize that amid this crisis, API equipment manufacturers must focus on innovation, developing environmentally-friendly equipment with advanced technologies to shorten production times and improve efficiency. Furthermore, these manufacturers need to enhance equipment quality while lowering production costs to make high-efficiency equipment more accessible. As equipment costs decrease, API production costs will also be reduced, allowing companies to allocate more resources to equipment upgrades and replacements.
